Q: I’m teaching a CalRBS class – where do I start?
A:
Booking a visit to LSC
- Our major challenges are space and staffing, so please contact us by filling out this request form as soon as you begin planning your syllabi.
- We will schedule an LSC staff member to oversee all hands-on activities with LSC materials. If your class consists of multiple parts, please consolidate the portions that require hands-on access to LSC materials and provide adequate time for set-up and tear-down.
Requesting LSC Materials
- Please create an LSC User Account here.
- (NOTE: LSC utilizes Aeon, a common request and fulfillment system for Special Collections and Archives but requires a separate account from other institutions - this includes the Clark Library.)
- Once you’ve created your account and booked your class visit, LSC staff will create an activity linked to your account. You can then submit requests for class materials via the Library Catalog and add them to the activity. (Please see How do I request LSC materials for in-class instruction?.) If your class is making multiple visits, please note the specific date for the request in the “Special Requests/Questions” field of the request form.
- Due to the high volume of requests, all requests for CalRBS classes must be submitted one week in advance. Requests submitted after this deadline might go unfilled.
- Most bibliographic material can be located and requested through the Library Catalog. Please see How do I request bibliographical materials from the Library Catalog (UC Library Search)?. If limiting by location, LSC materials are housed both in Library Special Collections AND the Southern Regional Library Facility. To limit your search to materials housed in Library Special Collections, please use the advanced search function and select the option to search Library Special Collections (YRL).
- Most archival materials can be located in finding aids indexed on the OAC -- however you cannot place requests for materials from the OAC (yes, this is terrible and we are working on it!). Please follow these instructions for locating the collection level catalog record in UC Search and submitting requests one box or container at a time (apologies in advance for the frustration!). For a guided walk-through of this process please see: How do I request materials from the Online Archive of California (OAC)?
Using LSC Materials
- We encourage use of our holdings and want your students to be fully immersed in their exploration of materiality. We will go over basic handling during the initial orientation and LSC staff will be on hand to assist with any handling questions or issues.
- Classes will follow standard reading room rules, so students will need to place their bags and personal items in the designated spaces before interacting with LSC materials. We welcome phones and cameras (please no flash, tripods, scanners) as well as laptops and tablets.
- All rooms with LSC materials are food and beverage free. You may have a leak-proof water bottle with your personal belongings but consumption must happen away from the materials.
- The LSC reading room is open Monday-Friday 10AM-5PM, and all materials set aside for your class will be available for individual research during those times.
Using NON-LSC Materials
- To avoid confusion, we require LSC and non-LSC materials remain separate in the classroom.
- If you would like to request non-circulating, non-LSC materials (i.e., medium-rare), please gather the links to those items' catalog records and email them to YRL-Circulation@library.ucla.edu.
