Restrictions on use and reproduction are indicated on a collection’s finding aid. A small number of collections cannot be copied or photographed per the terms of their donation. Additionally, some series may be closed to research until a certain date.
A collection may also be closed to research due to legal or ethical concerns. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) requires that we prohibit third party access to student education records. We can only release this information to the student.
To access materials that are restricted because they contain HIPAA protected information, we require you present proof of a research proposal approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB). An approved IRB proposal will include the research protocol for de-identifying the data in order to ensure the researcher and their work protects the privacy of the human subjects and their data.
