LSC owns a vast amount of rare books and archival materials and continues to collect new materials each year. Digitization is an expensive and resource intensive operation, even for relatively small projects. Digitization is more than simply scanning; scans are only useful if they are correctly organized and described and they can only be accessed if there is adequate maintenance of digital files. Considering the amount of work digitization requires and the size of LSC’s holdings, it is impossible for us to digitize everything we steward. Fortunately, our digitization policy is designed to ensure some of our most useful collections are reaching the widest possible audience and that we continue to add new digitized collections.
